  15. What is the Crusty Box?

  18.         The Crusty Box is an easy way to listen to
  19. neighbors phone calls, making calls yourself, and
  20. hacking/scanning without getting caught. It is
  21. extremely easy to make and is a good way to start
  22. phreaking. While it isn't real techincal, it can
  23. be useful. Does it deserve to be called a box?
  24. That's for the phreaking community to decide.

  27. Why is it so Crusty?

  30.      It is called the Crusty Box because it is
  31. not much of box and is easy to make. Most boxes
  32. deal with the insides of telephones and more elec-
  33. tronic material. The Crusty Box simply works with
  34. phone lines and a few extras. Paint it brown when
  35. you're done. It was the first color of mine, but
  36. tan and brown were already taken. Don't you think
  37. of brown when you hear the word crusty?

  40. How Do You Make One?
  41. *****************************************

  43.         Extremely simple and cheap. It really doesn't
  44. have to be a box, but it can. Below are the
  45. materials you'll need:
  46.  
  47. - a LONG telephone wire (or a few with connectors)
  48. - a splitter (found at most electronic stores, allows
  49.             two lines to go into one jack)
  50. - an extra phone 
  51. - a computer with a modem
  52. - a small ring box (or somthing of that type)
  53.  
  54.         Take the box (paint it brown!) and cut a hole in
  55. one side, enought so the top of the splitter can fit
  56. through. Cut two on another side about the same size.
  57. Tape the splitter in the box so that the top is
  58. sticking out of the one hole. This is the hard part.
  59. Many times, on the outside of your victims house, there
  60. will be a phone jack or box. If there's a box, there
  61. should be 2 jacks. They should say line, or phone, or
  62. something to that effect. There should be a wire going
  63. into one or both of the jacks. Remove the wire and
  64. insert your spiltter into the jack (if there is two,
  65. finish completing your box and if doesn't work, switch
  66. jacks). Now take the wire that was orginally in the
  67. jack and put it into one end of the splitter. The box
  68. is now installed. Take the extremely long phone wire
  69. and put it into the other end of the splitter. Run
  70. that wire into your house and into your modem (you'll
  71. have to unplug the line thats already going in there).
  72. It IS illegal to run phone lines from one hosue to
  73. another, so you could bury the line or hide it somehow.

  98. Alternate ways of making the Crusty Box

  101.         If you don't want to keep the box on your neighbor's
  102. house, there is an alternate way to make a Crusty Box.
  103. You'll need the same materials except you'll also need 2
  104. extension connectors (can be found wherever you bought
  105. the splitter). Cut the box and insert the splitter as
  106. shown above. Find you neighbors line that goes into his
  107. jack and put and extension connector on it. Take the
  108. long phone line and run it into your house. Put the
  109. other extension connector on the end of the splitter.
  110. Plug the long phone wire into one side of the splitter.
  111. Take another long phone line and plug it into the top
  112. of the splitter, into the extension connector you just
  113. put there. Take a short phone line and plug it into
  114. the other jack in the splitter. Plug the other end
  115. that short phone line into your modem. Take the long
  116. phone line that is connected to the extension connector
  117. (the one that is in the top is the splitter) and run it
  118. back to your neighbors house and finally plug it in to
  119. his jack. Bury the two lines. This way is more complex,
  120. but you'll have the box in your possession, and you can
  121. easily unplug the lines and put the orginal wire back
  122. in the jack. Here's some ascii art to represent it:

  142. Using the Crusty Box

  145.         There are many things you can do once you have
  146. the Crusty Box installed. You can use your phone to
  147. call people useing their line (this billing them).
  148. This is not too smart because you can get into
  149. trouble is they find out something is happening
  150. or they find your box! Also, make sure they have
  151. free local calling so each call won't be billed when
  152. you war dial.

  158.         Listening to your neighbor's conversations can be
  159. interesting. To do this as discrete as possible, I
  160. recommend a terminal emulator. If you just pick up
  161. a phone they will hear it. Once in the emulatorm type
  162. "ATDT" and the modem will let you listen to their phone
  163. line. Hit return again to hang up. If you type numbers
  164. after the "ATDT" it will dial those numbers. A good
  165. terminal emulator for the Mac is Z-Term of Smartcom
  166. Master. I don't know of many for PC, but I'm sure
  167. they're out there.

  173.         When your neighbor isn't home, it would be a great
  174. time to war dial/hack. It's not on your line so you
  175. might not get busted (unless they don't have a computer).
  176. Just do everything as normal as you usually would.

  178.         You can also make prank calls and such without
  179. getting them traced to your house.

  185.         Using the Crusty Box is just like stealing a
  186. phone from their house. The splitter allows to
  187. wire to go into one jack, thus having 2 phones,
  188. or a phone and a modem operational at the same
  189. time. You are using your neighbor's line for your
  190. personal use. Have fun, and don't get caught!
